Since 1 January 2026 the federal transfer tax on a suppressor is $0. Everything else stayed exactly where it was — the Form 4, the background check, the fingerprints, the wait. And none of it helps if the thread pitch is wrong, the mount doesn't match, or your ammunition goes supersonic on a warm afternoon.
One thing changed. A great deal did not, and the difference matters more than most of the coverage suggested.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed 4 July 2025, reduced the federal transfer tax to $0 for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and AOWs, effective 1 January 2026. A ninety-year-old cost simply stopped applying.
Form 4 for a dealer transfer or Form 1 to build your own. Background check, fingerprints, passport photo, ATF approval, and you still wait before you take possession. The paperwork is identical — only the number on it moved.
Several states prohibit suppressors outright regardless of federal law. And the tax elimination did not extend to machine guns or destructive devices — those still carry the $200.
Removing the financial barrier released a lot of pent-up demand into the same approval queue. Cost stopped being the thing that decides your timeline. Check current ATF processing times rather than any figure you read in an article.

Buying a host that leaves the factory with a threaded muzzle removes a whole step, and usually comes with suppressor-height sights already fitted.

The can quiets the muzzle blast. A supersonic bullet makes its own crack downrange and there is nothing at the muzzle that can stop it. That is why subsonic ammunition exists.
Bulk subsonic in the caliber built for it. 300 BLK was designed around a heavy subsonic bullet from a short barrel — everything else is a compromise.
